MUSICAL MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATRE: A SPIRITED GAME OF MURDER

A musical, murderously funny fundraising dinner and show for adults only benefiting the programs and productions of  The Sooner Theatre of Norman, Inc.

Join us as we stagger down memory lane and re-live the last moments of the 20th Century, when all the computers were supposed to stop working and planes were gonna fall from the sky. It’s one last round at a beach-side bar in a has-been town where folks are counting down to chaos on New Year’s Eve, 1999. But somebody at the party gets a head start on extinction; and now it’s up to you to solve the murder. On a night filled with iconic ‘90’s songs, The Sooner Theatre nervously presents their annual musical murder mystery dinner fundraiser.

All proceeds from the dinner and musical theatre extravaganza benefit the programs and operations of the historic Sooner Theatre, an anchor of Norman’s thriving downtown arts district.

The show is written by James Briggs of the Norman Parks and Recreation Department.

ANYTHING GOES

The Sooner Theatre's Republic Bank & Trust Studio Series Presents
ANYTHING GOES

Music and Lyrics by
Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter
Original Book by P.G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton
and Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse
New Book by Timothy Crouse & John Weidman

The S.S. American is preparing to set sail from New York to England. Billy Crocker, a young assistant to Wall Street tycoon Elisha J. Whitney, a passenger on the ship, decides to stow away in hopes of wooing his long-lost love and wealthy debutante, Hope Harcourt, who is also on board. However, much to Billy’s chagrin, Hope’s mother, Evangeline Harcourt, is delighted that Hope is engaged to be married to a stuffy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (who is also onboard), upon arrival in England.

Also on the ship are Reno Sweeney, an evangelist-turned-nightclub singer, and her bevy of “angelic” showgirls, who will be providing music and dance entertainment during the crossing. The ship has no sooner set sail than Reno runs into Billy, an old friend, and he persuades her to help him break upHope’s engagement.

“Moonface” Martin, a gangster known as “Public Enemy 13” and his moll Erma are disguised as a reverend and a missionary, respectively. They have two Chinese “converts” and all four attempt to evade the law while on board. Billy eventually learns the identity of this misfit bunch, and, in exchange for his silence, they too join in the scheme to break up Hope and Lord Evelyn.

After more disguises, ploys, confessions, mistaken identities, and marriage proposals, all done to the fantastic music of Cole Porter, how will everything work out? Who knows? Anything goes!

NUNSENSE!

By Dan Goggin
At The Studio of The Sooner Theatre Event Center
110 E Main
Norman, OK  73069

June 6-9, 2019

Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon.
